About us

EuroSibEnergo is Russia’s largest independent power company (in terms of installed electricity capacity of power generation plants) and ranks as one of the largest hydropower generation companies in the world. EuroSibEnergo was formed through the acquisition and subsequent consolidation of power generation, engineering and coal assets held since 2001.

The company controls 18 power generation plants with a combined installed electricity capacity of 19.5 GW and heat power generating assets with 17485 Gcal/h of total installed heat capacity. Over 15 GW capacity falls on major Russian hydro power plants located on Siberian rivers the Angara and the Yenisei, specifically Krasnoyarskaya HPP, Bratskaya HPP, Ust-Ilimskaya HPP and Irkutskaya HPP. In 2009, EuroSibEnergo produced 82.8 TWh of electricity (69 TWh of which were generated by HPPs), which represented approximately 9% of Russia’s total electricity production.

EuroSibEnergo is a vertically integrated power group, which makes it possible for us to control expenses and achieve maximum efficiency as well as to ensure the reliability of our operations. Our company engages in all major areas of the power industry in Russia — from coal production for our CHPs and generation of electric and heat power, to sales to end consumers. We have an engineering unit within the company that has EPC / EPCM competences providing repair and modernization to the company’s existing assets and construction of new power generating facilities. EuroSibEnergo’s own coal reserves amount to 1.26 billion tonnes and the aggregated coal production from company’s assets for the year ended 31 December 2009 exceeded 12 million tonnes enabling the company to satisfy the demand of its coal-fired CHPs in full.

EuroSibEnergo’s major assets are located in Eastern Siberia, a region forecasted to see a significant increase in power consumption, in connection with the upcoming implementation of power-consuming projects, which include the development of oil and natural gas deposits, the construction of oil pipelines and natural gas pipelines, the construction of hydrocarbon processing facilities, and the construction of new steelworks, including aluminum smelters, among others. EuroSibEnergo has reserve capacities at its existing power stations and is currently developing an investment program for the construction of new stations in the region in order to guarantee the increasing demand for electric power along with increasing sales volumes can be satisfied in the long-term.

A number of EuroSibEnergo’s key assets are located relatively close to China, this is why the company actively conducts negotiations regarding participation in electric power exportation to Northern and South-Eastern provinces of China, within the framework of Russian-Chinese intergovernmental agreement signed in 2006. The agreement provides for an increase in the annual volume of Russian electric power exported to China up to 20TWh by 2020.

EuroSibEnergo has extensive experience in the independent management of power assets, which it has carried out since 2001. The programs implemented have been designed to aid modernization and assist with cost saving, making it possible to operate highly efficient assets; as a result the cost of generating power at our HPPs is lower than other HPPs across Russia; fuel consumption at our CHP’s per 1 kWh of generated power is significantly lower than the average levels across Siberia.

UC RUSAL’s aluminum smelters — Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk and Irkutsk — are among the major consumers of electricity generated by EuroSibEnergo and account for the consumption of half of the electric power produced by EuroSibEnergo’s generating facilities. EuroSibEnergo supplies electric power to UC RUSAL under long-term PPAs, with prices linked to the LME’s quoted aluminum price through pricing formulae. The said agreements provide stable revenues for the company as well as additional profits resulting from aluminum price hikes on global markets.
